Fever at Dawn

Director: Péter Gárdos

2015/Israel, Sweden, Hungary/106 minutes

Hungarian with English Subtitles

Based on the love letters exchanged between writer/director Péter Gárdos’ parents, Fever at Dawn chronicles the unlikely but incredibly life-affirming love story between two Hungarian Holocaust survivors.

Fever at Dawn takes us to Sweden in the autumn and winter of 1945. The war is over and the Jews that survived desperately want to create new connections. A young Hungarian poet named Miklos, healing in Sweden but given only six months to live, ignores his fate and writes to all 117 of the surviving women from his hometown also recovering in Sweden to find the love of his life. A bored and bedridden Lili replies, and what follows is their tender and passionate exchange as the two fall in love against all odds, eluding the close eyes of their caretakers and friends to be together.

This heartwarming romance combines beautiful black-and-white cinematography and a light, humorous tone to shows us the experiences of Shoah survivors recovering after the war. Fever at Dawn has screened at Jewish Film Festivals in San Francisco, Toronto, Rochester, Los Angeles, Nashville, and more. Colorado Premiere.
