Variety lauds the quietly intense Mountain, as “impressively balancing the predictable with the unexpected…the first-time feature writer-director weaves a complex portrait of a constrained life, understanding that no one is fully knowable.”
Tzvia, a lonely, isolated Orthodox woman living in the Mount of Olives, wife to uptight Yeshiva teacher Reuven and mother of four, takes to walking around the ancient cemetery to break up the mundane tasks of the everyday. Tzvia meanders among the graves, chatting with international tourists, participating in funeral rites, and politely but reluctantly befriending a Palestinian groundskeeper. One night, after yet another rebuff from her husband, she enters the cemetery and unwittingly stumbles upon a startling sexual scene. Shocked but curiously drawn to the forbidden encounter, and ever the nourishing mother, she begins to bring the pimps, prostitutes, and drug-dealers home-cook meals in exchange for company, the satiation of curiosity, and escape from her unbearably humble and solitary life.
A stunning debut from writer/director Yaelle Kayam, Mountain has screened at major international film festivals including Palm Springs, Toronto, AFI Fest, and Rome. It has also screened at Jewish Film Festivals in Atlanta, San Diego, Houston, Washington, and beyond. Awards include Venice 2015, Orizzonti Competition; Toronto 2015, Discovery; and AFI FEST 2015, New Auteurs. Colorado Premiere.
