A Tale of Love and Darkness, starring Natalie Portman

Feature Film – Colorado Premiere
Sponsored by Lisa and Lynn Taussig

Based on Amos Oz’s international best-seller, A Tale of Love and Darkness.

Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman makes her directorial debut in A Tale of Love and Darkness, an adaptation of famous Israeli writer Amos Oz’s best-selling memoir. Portman provided a sincerely felt, handsomely shot and generally promising debut feature as both director and screenwriter. The film picks up in eight year old Oz’s life in 1945 Jerusalem. Portman gracefully portrays Oz’s mother, Fania, who struggles with raising her son in Jerusalem at the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel. Dealing with a married life of unfulfilled promises and integration in a foreign land, Fania battles her inner demons and longs for a better world for her son.

The film is a study of the moment when Jews changed from being a people in the diaspora to a people with a country. The birth of Israel is so much more than a setting here—it is the existential reality that shapes the characters.
