Description:

A Jewish cardinal—is that possible? Well, yes and no, contends this exciting French film based on the amazing true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger (1926-2007) – son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, who maintained his cultural identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism at a young age. His parents went to Auschwitz (where his mother perished) while Lustiger was spared this fate having been left in the care of a non-Jewish woman in Orleans. He entered the priesthood and rose quickly within the ranks of the Church, ultimately receiving an appointment as Archbishop of Paris by Pope Jean Paul II.  Throughout his life, Lustiger advocated for dialogue between Christians and Jews.  He emphasized publicly that he personally continued to identify as a Jew despite converting—and was criticized for this by both sides. When Carmelite nuns establish a convent within the forbidden walls of Auschwitz, Lustiger finds himself a mediator between the two communities – and may be forced at last to choose his side.
